Orthopaedic surgeon, hospitalist join UMMC's new faculty ranks

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Khristinn Kellie Suzanne Leitch, M.D.

Dr. Khristinn Kellie Leitch, associate professor of surgery at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and a former Member of Parliament in Canada, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery.

After receiving her B.A. with distinction in life sciences from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, in 1992, Leitch earned her M.D. in 1994 at the University of Toronto, where she also completed her postgraduate orthopaedic surgery residency training from 1994-2001. During her residency she earned her M.B.A. at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1998. From 2001-02 she completed her pediatric orthopaedic surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. She also completed the Public Executive Program at the School of Business at Queen’s University, Kingston, in 2004.

Leitch joined the faculty of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Western Ontario, London, in 2002 as an assistant professor and concurrently served as an assistant dean of medicine from 2006-08 and as an associate scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute, London Health Sciences Center, from 2004-09. In 2008, she became an associate professor at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry before joining the University of Toronto as an associate professor of surgery in 2009. She served as chair of the Ivey Centre for Health Innovation and Leadership at the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, from 2009-11 and as an associate scientist at the SickKids Research Institute, Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, from 2009-11.

Elected to the Parliament of Canada to represent the constituency of Simcoe-Grey, Ontario, in 2011, Leitch served as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Labour and the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada from 2011- 13, and was appointed as Minister of Labour and Minister of the Status of Women for the Government of Canada from 2013-15.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and recipient of the prestigious Order of Ontario, presented to an Ontario resident who has demonstrated a high level of individual excellence in his or her field, Leitch is an active member of several professional Canadian organizations. The author or coauthor of 21 articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, three book chapters, numerous peer-reviewed conference proceedings and 15 government and business articles, she has given numerous presentations at scientific meetings and conferences throughout Canada and internationally.

She is active in community service, organizing the annual Lynne Leitch Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and serving as a volunteer pediatric orthopaedic surgeon for Health Volunteers Overseas, among many other contributions.

Hamid Ullah, M.B.B.S.

Hamid Ullah, a hospitalist at Salem Health in Oregon, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine.

After graduating from Edwards School and College, Peshawar, Pakistan, Ullah earned his M.B.B.S. at Aga Khan University Medical School, Karachi, Pakistan, in 2011. He then completed an internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 2016 and joined Salem Health.

An active member of the American College of Physicians, Ullah has authored two posters presented at scientific meetings. His research interests center around gastrointestinal conditions, malaria and tuberculosis.
